The three plays that comprise This Restless House can be performed on their own or as part of a continuous evening. Part one being Agamemnon’s Return plays on its own, then parts two and three The Bough Breaks and Electra And Her Shadow play as different parts of the same evening. Zinnie Harris reimagines this ancient drama, using a contemporary sensibility to rework the stories, placing the women in the centre. Orestes’ leading role is replaced by his sister Electra, who as a young child witnesses her father’s murder and is compelled to take justice into her own hands until she too must flee the Furies.

When he in turn is killed at the hands of his wife Clytemnestra, their son Orestes takes up the mantle of avenging his father, continuing the bloodshed until peace is ultimately found in the rule of law. After a stormy voyage, Agamemnon and Cassandra landed in Argolis. Agamemnon was slain by his wife alone in a bath, a net having first been thrown over him to prevent resistance. Her wrath at the sacrifice of Iphigenia, and her jealousy of Cassandra, are said to have been the motives of her crime.

Another significant building is the Treasury of Atreus, said to be the tomb of Agamemnon’s father. Hector is the greatest Trojan warrior, brother to Paris, and the eldest son of Priam and Hecuba. In the Iliad he kills Achilles’ companion Patroclus; Achilles takes revenge by slaying Hector. The Trojan prince Paris is the son of king Priam and queen Hecuba. At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis the goddess Eris (‘Strife’) rolled an apple marked ‘for the fairest’ down the aisle; the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite quarrelled over who should receive the title, and Zeus entrusted the decision to Paris. Each goddess offered him a prize – he chose Aphrodite, who had offered him Helen of Sparta, the most beautiful woman in the world, who was already married to Menelaus.

, tragedians had only recently begun to use three actors rather than two, and Aeschylus brilliantly exploits the audience’s expectations to create surprise and confusion when the third actor, playing the foreign woman enslaved by Agamemnon, speaks. Still more surprising, the outsider turns out to know far more than any native-born Greek about the house of Argos – where, as she well knows, she will die alongside her captor. Agamemnon and Menelaus, the sons of Atreus, usually referred to as the Atreidai, returned in Mycenae when they were grown and, with the help of Tyndareus the King of Sparta, expelled Thyestes. Agamemnon married Clytemnestra and became King of Mycenae; Menelaus married Helen and became King of Sparta.

Another account makes him the son of Pleisthenes , who is said to have been Aerope’s first husband. The fortunes of Agamemnon have formed the subject of numerous tragedies, ancient and modern, the most famous being the Oresteia of Aeschylus. In the legends of the Peloponnesus, Agamemnon was regarded as the highest type of a powerful monarch, and in Sparta he was worshipped under the title of Zeus Agamemnon. His tomb was pointed out among the ruins of Mycenae and at Amyclae.

Such proposals have prompted a backlash from the cinema sector on the grounds that it would exclude a broad swathe of the population and add a layer of bureaucracy when social distancing has already proven effective. The industry fears that the Government may be about to inadvertently jeopardise its recovery, just as Godzilla vs Kong has provided a modicum of hope. This Restless House raises the question of whether such unseen terrors are external forces of punishment or internal projections of guilt and insanity.
