BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union threatened to crack down on an settlement between Google and Fb mum or dad Meta for on-line show promoting companies, saying Friday that the deal could breach the bloc’s guidelines on honest competitors.

The EU’s competitors watchdog opened a probe right into a 2018 pact involving the participation of Meta’s “Viewers Community” in Google’s “Open Bidding” program.

The European Fee, the EU’s govt arm, mentioned the deal could also be a part of an effort to exclude advert tech companies that compete with Google’s Open Bidding program — which might hurt publishers and customers.

“If confirmed by our investigation, this is able to prohibit and deform competitors within the already concentrated advert tech market, to the detriment of rival advert serving applied sciences, publishers and finally customers,” European Competitors Commissioner Margrethe Vestager mentioned in a press release Friday.

The UK has launched its personal inquiry into the settlement between Google and Meta.
