For many gratings, especially those designed for use with lasers, it is desirable for all of the incident light to be diffracted into a single order to minimize loss in the overall system. The most straightforward way to realize a single order is to make the grating period Λ small enough to eliminate all other nonzero orders as solutions to the Grating Equation . How small Λ must be depends on the wavelength and the angle of incidence. Ordinary pressed CD and DVD media are every-day examples of diffraction gratings and can be used to demonstrate the effect by reflecting sunlight off them onto a white wall.
Figure 4 shows the impact of slit width reduction on the ability to resolve sharp spectral lines from a lamp source. The monochromator resolution is also affected by aberrations in the optical system and by proper grating illumination. Minimizing these contributions ensures that the resolution is determined mainly by P and the slit width.
Constructive interference occurs when where d is the distance between the slits, is the angle relative to the incident direction, and m is the order of the interference. Figure 1Referring to Figure 1, imagine a beam of light represented by the two green rays incident on the binary grating shown. The light is diffracted in many directions, only one of which is indicated by the blue rays. If the difference between adjacent green-blue ray paths diffracted off of identical locations on adjacent periods is equal to a multiple of the wavelength of light, the two blue rays interfere constructively. Striated muscle is the most commonly found natural diffraction grating and, this has helped physiologists in determining the structure of such muscle. Some everyday electronic components contain fine and regular patterns, and as a result readily serve as diffraction gratings.
As the number of slits increased, the fringe width would also increase, because with more slits, the more slits the light waves could travel through, and more interference could occur. Then thinner the edges shape , then higher the electrostatic potential from the surface electrons of the edge. This electrons and the photons form a quantized field and the projection of this field are the intensity distributions behind the edge. The intensity of these maxima in the picture falls of continuously, so they must be type 1 maxima. To make the analysis easier I have ignored the effect of the diffraction envelope. The reason for this inference is that the width of the diffraction envelope modulation of intensity is much broader in the second diagram than the first.
The longer wavelengths have to travel a longer distance, so they are delayed, allowing the shorter wavelengths to catch up. For example, the longer wavelengths in a pulse arrived first, and the shorter wavelengths arrived last. As shown in the following figure, the Bragg grating is made so segments which reflect different wavelengths are in different positions along the length of the grating. This reflection phenomena is explained in the following figure.
In physics, Bragg’s law, Wulff–Bragg’s condition or Laue-Bragg interference, a special case of Laue diffraction, gives the angles for coherent scattering of waves from a crystal lattice. Etching in integrated circuits can be done to a resolution of 50 nm, so slit separations of 400 nm are at the limit of what we can do today. This line spacing is too small to produce diffraction of light.
Gratings with low groove frequency will generate many diffracted orders. For monochromatic light, e.g. from a laser, a grating may be used as a beamsplitter, for generating two or more beams. Aluminum bar grating provides a lightweight alternative to it’s steel counterpart.
The holographic techniques use a beam splitter to divide a single input UV beam into two, interfering them at the fiber. The structure of the FBG can vary via the refractive index, or the grating period. The grating period can be uniform or graded, and either localised or distributed in a superstructure. The groove spacing determines the angles at which a single wavelength will constructively interfere to form diffracted orders , which are equivalent to the intensity peaks shown in Figure 1. In addition to the spacing of the grooves, the groove profile plays a key role in the performance of a grating. When monochromatic light strikes a grating, a fraction of it is diffracted into each order .
After development, the sinusoidal variation in light intensity during exposure is transformed into a physical structure of the same profile. The last image of the pattern from a diffraction grating probably shows a much greater angular range than for the middle image because it shows the unequal spacing of the fringes. The intensity of the fringes produced by the interference of light from the slits is modulated by the diffraction pattern produced by each of the slits. The first thing to note is that each of the slits produces a diffraction pattern the width of which is controlled by the width of the slit and the wavelength of the light.

Using this grating, what would the angles be for the second-order maxima? Discuss the relationship between integral reductions in lines per centimeter and the new angles of various order maxima. A diffraction grating is a large collection of evenly spaced parallel slits that produces an interference pattern similar to but sharper than that of a double slit. In Figure 5, we see a diffraction grating showing light rays from each slit traveling in the same direction.
